Changing The Approach To Pain

Understanding Chronic Pain

Over 50 million Americans suffer from chronic pain and it is estimated there are nearly a 100 Million more with mid to long term acute pain, whom under the new pain management guidelines, are without treatment options.

People living with chronic pain have limited treatment options and most of those options are pharmaceutical. Recent legislation and social changes are further adding to the suffering of people in chronic pain as long-term treatment pharmaceutical treatment options are being significantly reduced.

Those recovering from a major medical events, injuries and other issues are faced with extremely time-limited treatment options which fall short of seeing them through to a full recovery. Due to time and insurance compensation constraints medical providers are increasingly finding themselves trapped – only able to provide triage type treatments for the initial acute pain only.  Once the limited physical therapy sessions have been exhausted the patient is left without options and at risk for their injury or illness to worsen, developing irreversible permanent damage and long term chronic pain.

Adding to the problem, there are hundreds of thousands of Americans that have an untreated injury or medical condition, either due to lack of proper medical coverage or financial constraints.  These people do not receive even the minimum level of care and are at an even higher risk of developing permanent long-term chronic pain.

Living with long term chronic pain is not just the physical impact of the pain itself and the physical impact of the condition/injury but chronic pain also has significant psychological impacts.  Those in chronic pain can feel anxious, rejected, inadequate, depressed and hopeless.  Chronic pain can impact social connections, family relationships and a desire to put in the effort to maintain relationships.   Chronic pain can impact your ability to be productive at work, your ability to contribute at home and your ability to parent your children.  Impact on one’s ability to work can lead to financial impacts on your life (as can costly medical bills/treatments).  In short, chronic pain can substantially negatively impact every aspect of your life.   Often those in pain begin to feel frustrated and defeated- believing that pain has won.

Chronic pain of one family member has a spill-over impact onto other family members.  A spouse can feel resentful or ignored at the change in household responsibilities or lack of attention; a child can feel confused or let down when a parent physically can’t interact like he/she used to.   Chronic pain can impact family plans when even standing online at the mall or amusement park is too much to take and a trip must be cut short.  The full unintended impact of chronic pain on our loved ones is too long to list.

But pain effects more than just the person suffering and their loved ones. The impact of  pain, and chronic pain has a much larger impact. There is a massive, 300%+ increase in health care cost for someone with chronic pain. In the US the added health care cost of chronic pain alone is estimated at over $635 Billion and Americans with chronic or severe pain are spending an additional $292 Billion out of pocket every year. And both the number of people in pain and cost of treatment are exponentially rising every year.

Beyond the cost of health care, the impact on work productivity is estimated in the trillions of dollars annually. At the company level this cost corporations and small businesses hundreds to millions in lost revenues every day. The amount pain costs our families, our communities, our country, our world is astronomical and is increasing at an exponential rate. Struggling with pain takes a grueling toll and it affects everyone.

The lack of a proper treatment options is only increasing the epidemic of chronic pain. Medical providers constrained by time and lack of reimbursement are not able to sufficiently address all the contributors to chronic pain and limited treatment options are falling short to prevent the transition of those struggling to recover from mid to long term acute pain.

Improving Care Through Medical Provider Integration

Because chronic pain is a lifelong condition Optimally Balanced is designed to support lifelong change through guided self-awareness and reinforcement of the three pillars of health: mentality, exercise and nutrition. Our research proven methodology is set in an interactive and engaging experience that utilizes gamification and unparalleled combination of an innovate AI, based on a biological adaptation model, and highly educated and knowledgeable subject matter experts.

Both the underlying program and delivery platform are designed around an adaptive principle that works to generate initial beneficial improvement and then constantly adapt to the individual to help maintain and increase their improvements giving people lifelong support.

To complete the continuum of care and produce truly life changing results, we have included full integration for medical provider(s). By allowing the Optimally Balanced members to share part or all of their activity data with their medical providers their providers are given an additional set of monthly records they are able to review and to help them gain greater insight and better treat their patients.

Medical providers are integrated into the Optimally Balanced app via data sharing. Medical providers  receive summarized activity data that they are able to review either pre or post visit or that can be used as a part of a supplemental virtual visit allowing providers an efficient and effective way to provide additional care and oversight on a monthly basis for their patients that are seen on a less frequent basis. Medical providers can utilize Optimally Balance in the same way they would any other treatment, they simply ‘prescribe’ Optimally Balanced using a unique code. If their patient is not already an Optimally Balanced member they go through a simple enrollment, however, if they already already an Optimally Balanced member the code would simply add that provider to their data sharing. This reduced the overall cost and helps to provide a more consistent and through level of patient awareness by all providers the member interacts with.

Our program is unique in that in it provides a systematic approach that works to support lifelong change focusing on guided self-awareness of the three pillars of health: mentality, exercise and nutrition.   We offer a research tested approach that helps cut through the plethora of often conflicting nutrition and exercise information out there.  We connect the emotions, feelings, motivation, stressors and plethora of mentality factors that impact one’s ability to adhere to an exercise and nutrition program.  We focus on truly teaching our members the connections between eating, exercise and mentality so that they can retain this knowledge and truly learn how to maintain a lifelong healthy lifestyle.  Chronic pain is a lifelong condition the solution or program needed to be on that was sustainable for life.  Optimally Balanced is designed as an extremely low impact and highly flexible program to allow even those with severe pain or physical limitations, to participate.  Our program produces long lasting results that can work for anyone no matter their starting point.

Optimally Balanced members work at their own pace through self-guided and coach-assisted modules that focus on educating and working with the individual to identify the factors that that increase or decrease pain and the connections between eating, exercise and mentality. By connecting the emotions, feelings, motivation, stressors and plethora of mentality factors that impact one’s pain and the correlated ability to adhere to an exercise and nutrition program subscribers gain strategies and insight to help the overcome future obstacles.

By keeping the monthly price point in the range of a common prescription co-pay and allowing any number of additional providers we are creating a universal and affordable solution that helps to integrate multiple providers from the specialist to the general practitioners. Moreover, since this is a non-pharmaceutical solution it can be used by any type of provider, that is treating those in chronic pain, including psychologist, holistic medicine to chiropractors. For some people it can be used as the only or in conjunction with non-opioids for the long-term management of non-acute pain which means the long-term effects will be more drastic to the insurance providers as there would be a significant decrease in multiple risk segments.

The Optimally Balanced app works the same whether used completely standalone or when used in conjunction with medical providers. Since the subscription is direct to the individual, they can add or remove providers and are able to share with one or more providers simultaneously. Members can control how and when they share their data making Optimally Balanced completely portable allows us to bridge the gaps and span between multiple provider specialties while helping to give a continuous level of support.
